ABOUT THE AREA

Covering an area of almost 30Km², and with an official 30,000 inhabitants, Benalmadena is just 19 kilometers from Malaga Airport. It's easy to reach from both Malaga capital and International Airport by road, train or bus and its privileged position looking out onto the Mediterranean Sea, it is little wonder that it has grown so rapidly in size over the last 20 years and become so popular - especially with the British. It is always lively, but the busiest time of year is during the hot summer months, when holidaymakers swell the population by more than triple - up to 100,000 people.

This area offers an easy lifestyle and a comfortable climate (minimum temperatures of 5º and a summer maximum of 35º) with the light sea breezes. Many thousands of British families have rented or bought holiday homes and a large number of them have settled down permanently to live the life of their dreams.

Benalmadena is split into three distinct areas:

Benalmádena Pueblo
(The old village) is located on the mountain side, an old, typical Andalucian village with steep, narrow streets and white-painted houses that retain a wealth of culture. The village has more than its share of attractions including museums, a castle, sports centre and a wide and varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Arroyo de la Miel
is a populated area between the mountains and the coast. This is where most of the area's population and businesses are located and it too has a wide range of attractions including a sports complex, bilingual library and the world famous theme park Tivoli World. This is also where the cable car to the mountain peak starts from.

Benalmádena Costa
sits next to Torremolinos. It has 9km of shoreline with beautiful beaches and tiny coves and a fully equipped marina for over 1,000 vessels. One of the most popular attractions in the marina is the Sea Life Centre. The marina boasts many international awards for design and functionality and at night the award winning Benalmadena port is illuminated in spectacular style. Crystal clear waters are filled with huge fish that bubble to the surface if you feed them. The port is also home to many international events such as fishing tournaments and regattas. There are many English, Scottish and Irish pubs, most of which have live big screen sporting events. You have the choice of all nationality restaurants, including, Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Lebanese, etc. There are also plenty opportunities to try out the local dishes and the best place to go is along the beach or to the Marina and visit a "Chiringuito" (Beach Bar) where fresh fish dishes are served up with a wonderful chilled wine or a refreshing glass of sangria. One of the best places on the Costa del Sol for nightlife is Benalmadena, with so many different types of bars, clubs, restaurants that there is always something to suit all tastes. From the latest Clubland sounds with top D.J.'s to swish sophistication and the live jazz, or salsa dancing till dawn. At the crossroads before going down to the Port, is the Solimar Plaza, where there are more pubs and clubs for the night owls, as well as a recently built commercial centre with 8 cinemas to choose from.

Benalmadena Costa also has its own casino and world renowned golf course. Paloma Park, is a garden of over 200,000 square metres, overlooking the sea. This has a large lake, stocked with various water birds, fish and turtles. Next to the park is the feria ground where the flea market is held every Wednesday and the local market every Friday. Benalmadena’s paseo maritimo is lined with small shops and bars and fronts along a wide beach that is kept clean and has lifeguard services.

The local countryside around Benalmadena offers excellent hill-walking, mountain biking and horse riding. There are many pathways that make it easy and there are companies that offer a guided walk service.

The N340 highway runs alongside Benalmadena Costa and turns into the N340a which runs through the centre. So getting around is easy and is rarely congested. The railway station for Benalmadena is located in Arroyo de la Miel, close to the Tivoli Theme Park. Trains run from here to Fuengirola and Malaga. Train travel is cheap and very efficient.
The coastal bus service runs along the seafront road. There is also an excellent circular service running between the village and the port.

Close to Benalmadena there are several other important tourist resorts such as Fuengirola, Torremolinos , Mijas and Marbella
